Running from the past and being or not being

“I’m running from my past”, said Augusto, a 40 year old man who after losing his mother travels to Tlacotalpan, Veracruz and falls in love with a woman 20 years younger than him. This is the first film of Marcelo González, Estar o no estar.

The film is a production of Café del Mar, and its cast includes Flavio Medina, Aislinn Derbez, Angélica Aragón, Patricia Reyes Spíndola, among other Mexican actors in this story located in a town in Veracruz.

“When I met Marcelo I realized he had a great theater career, he’s been a theater director for many years and a great knowledge of universal literature, and well this is reflected in his film and direction”, said Angélica Aragón.

Both Angélica Aragón and Flavio Medina agreed that filming Estar o no estar in Tlacotalpan was a nice experience because of the nearness of the rive, among other reasons.

“The Papaloapan, Flavio gave me his divine room, because the river was too strong, the bats and the cuijas, but this river seen in the film is one the biggest affluents in the country. Such a privilege being close to it and photograph it!”, said Aragón.

Meanwhile Flavio Medina said that the production film was one of the best things from the project, when the cast had a cup of coffee from Veracruz in the morning before getting to the set.

“I really like this character (…) lately all the characters I’ve played are sailing through the darkness and never left it, and this character is struggling to leave it before”.

The director and screenwriter said the film is inspired in two novels: La niebla by Miguel de Unamuno and Las noches blancas by Dostoievski, with the idea that the two main characters met each other.
