Mexican Tribute to the Artistic Career: Arturo Ripstein

This year, the eleventh edition of the Monterrey International Film Festival devotes its Tribute to the Artistic Career to the mexican director Arturo Ripstein, who will be the recipient of the Cabrito de Plata, as a recognition for his 50 years of cinema work.

Arturo Ripstein y Rosen – full name of the director– is from Mexico City. He was born on December 13th 1943 and in 1993 he obtained Spanish citizenship. He received the National Award of Science and Arts in the area of Fine Arts in 1997, the second filmmaker who achieved this recognition (the first was Luis Buñuel).

In 2014, The National Council for Culture and the Arts (CONACULTA) gave him the Fine Arts Medals for 50 years of film career; he also got the Ariel de Oro.

His debut as a director was when he was 21, in 1965, with Tiempo de Morir –a script written by Carlos Fuentes and Gabriel García Márquez turned into a western–; but even years before he had work in productions and made some short films.

In 1968, he made the film adaptation of Los Recuerdos del Porvenir, a novel by Elena Garro; it was during this decade that he consolidated as director by making three of the most import films of Mexican contemporary cinema: El Castillo de la Pureza (1972), El Lugar Sin Límites (1977) and Cadena Perpetua (1978).

Ripstein has made more than fifty films –shorts and features– along his career, among them: La Mujer del Puerto (1991), Principio y Fin (1993), La Reina de la Noche (1994), Profundo Carmesí (1996), El Coronel No Tiene Quien le Escriba (1998),El Evangelio de las Maravillas (1999) and Las Razones del Corazón (2011).

For his work, the filmmaker has been nominated for an Ariel by the Mexican Academy of Film Arts and Sciences in numerous occasions; besides, his work has been part and has been recognized in festivals such as Cannes, Venice, San Sebastián, Moscow, Cartagena, Sundance, Guadalajara, among others.

His most recent work, La Calle de la Amargura, will represent México in the 72nd Venice Film Festival in September.

The tribute by FIC Monterrey will take place August 25th, during the inauguration Gala at the Teatro de la Ciudad.
